Patient Q&A

Common questions in Neonatology & Paediatrics

What are the warning signs of neonatal sepsis?

Key warning signs include temperature instability (fever or low temp), poor feeding, lethargy, respiratory distress, mottled skin, and bulging fontanelle. Sepsis in newborns can deteriorate rapidly — early recognition and IV antibiotics are critical within the first hour.

How do you manage a premature baby at 28 weeks?

A 28-weeker needs surfactant therapy for lung maturity, respiratory support (often CPAP or ventilation), temperature regulation in an incubator, IV nutrition (TPN), and close monitoring for sepsis, IVH and ROP. Survival rates at 28 weeks exceed 90% in our Level-3 NICU.

Answered by Dr. Narendra Babu
When is it safe to take a NICU baby home?

Discharge readiness is based on: maintaining body temperature in open crib, breathing without support, full oral feeding, and adequate weight gain. Parents also receive NICU care training before discharge to ensure confidence at home.
